SPEAKER 1
It's Johanna. So maybe Midwestern Nice did win the night. I was thinking about last night's debate, and what stood out to me more than anything was tone. J.D. Vance and Tim Walz disagreed, and Vance still seemed like he wasn't sure who won the 2020 election.

Tim Waltz also kind of stood in it a couple times, but both men treated each other with respect. And refreshingly, they debated ideas back and forth. I don't think we can expect that tone to last much beyond the debate, and certainly not these last five weeks,

but it was a nice reminder of what debates were like before the 2016 election. And before anyone tells me, oh, they weren't there, you know, they weren't polite before 2016, I can promise you because I was there, The debate between Barack Obama and John McCain, that was nice.

Amazingly "Midwestern Nice" did seem to win the night

Thank you to all who joined our live programming last night

Last night’s debate likely won’t change the election. But it does tell us that there’s a world in which we can be respectful even when we disagree.

I’m really grateful for those who joined us live last night. Live programming on Substack is currently only available at the time it’s live. We’ll give more notice before upcoming live programs so all can tune in, and we’ll work to find ways to archive them. But for those of you who tuned in - we saw you - I’m so grateful.

Brandon Cobb, who you heard was uninspired after the Presidential Debate, left this debate more confident that the candidates wanted to work towards policy solutions. Both Walz and Vance talked about issues that plague our country, and while their solutions are different and you might agree with one over the other, the respect was notable.

We are seeing so many challenges and opportunities present themselves, and the next month will likely be a roller coaster. But I know we can solve our problems by working together, and that government can work.

Please send me your thoughts after the debate. So grateful again for all who joined last night.
